St John’s Northwestern Drill Team Earns Multiple Awards

May 17, 2021

Record haul of trophies for St John’s Northwestern Academies.

May first was a memorable one for 15 cadets from St John’s Northwestern Academies. That Saturday, these cadets competed in numerous events covering both drill and fitness at the 2021 National JROTC Fitness and Drill Competitions in Daytona, Florida. Competing against some of the best military academies and JROTC high school programs across the United States of America, these cadets were pushed both mentally and physically yet displayed determination, grit, teamwork and perseverance, competing in event after event, sometimes with only minutes between them. Months of daily practices, sometimes four times a day to get it right, were rewarded in a record number of trophies awarded – 7 for the team and 3 individual medals. In a special event honoring the cadets, Academies’ President Major-General (Ret) Paul E. Lima paid tribute to them as well as pledging to help future drill teams of the school improve on this impressive achievement and “increase our levels of execution and excellence”. During the ceremony, it was announced that six time World Drill Champion, Andres Ryan, an alum of the academy, would also be helping future drill teams train in their quest for top place.
