Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA) is seeking its next President.
The mission of the Academy is as follows:
“Our mission is to educate, develop, and inspire young men in a college preparatory, Christian, military environment. Cadets build character and learn leadership, independence, confidence, responsibility, and discipline in a setting that encourages mental, physical, and spiritual growth.”
FUMA serves young men in grades 7-12 and postgraduates. Located in Fork Union, Virginia, between Charlottesville and Richmond, the Academy is primarily a boarding school but also serves day students. Its cadet community includes students from across the United States and around the world. Fork Union Military Academy is a member of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), and the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS).
For more than 125 years, FUMA has helped families prepare young men for lives of character, service, and leadership. The Academy’s motto, Body. Mind. Spirit., describes the structure of a Fork Union education: high-level academics delivered through the distinctive One Subject Plan and reinforced through Call to Quarters; the discipline and physical challenge of a military and athletic environment; and an active Christian approach to character formation.
At a time when many families are seeking greater focus, confidence, resilience, and purpose for their sons, FUMA’s educational model is both enduring and increasingly relevant. FUMA must uniquely apply its timeless values to meet the challenge of developing young men of strength and character in a modern world. FUMA seeks a mission-aligned, externally engaged executive leader who will champion that model while expanding the Academy’s enrollment, resources, reach, and institutional strength. The next President will preserve FUMA’s Christian identity, formative military structure, and distinctive One Subject Plan while helping the Academy communicate and enhance its value to a new generation of families and supporters.Serving as President of FUMA is a calling.
Key Responsibilities:
• Serve as FUMA’s chief executive, principal ambassador, and leading advocate, articulating the Academy’s enduring mission and strategic vision while strengthening its external presence and strategic relationships
• Partner with the Board of Trustees to establish and execute strategic direction, governance priorities, budgeting, and long-term planning
• Lead the Academy’s development efforts and dedicate significant personal attention to building relationships and raising support for endowment, capital projects, and other strategic priorities
• Strengthen enrollment and re-enrollment by clearly communicating FUMA’s distinctive value and aligning recruitment, pricing, marketing and financial-aid strategy as well as through strategic alliances
• Recruit, develop, empower, and align exceptional senior leaders and, through the leadership team, ensure excellence across all operational areas, including but not limited to academics, athletics, and advancement, while maintaining fiscal discipline and effectiveness
• Model and advance FUMA’s Christian mission and faithfully steward its historic relationship with the Baptist General Association of Virginia
• Build strong relationships with cadets, faculty, staff, families, alumni, donors, and
the broader community
• Ensure sound financial stewardship, organizational accountability, and sustainable institutional growth
Qualifications:
• Personally grounded Christian faith, together with the ability to articulate and advance FUMA’s Christian mission while leading a religiously diverse cadet Community
• Significant leadership experience in education, the military, business, government, philanthropy, nonprofit service, or another complex mission-driven institution; independent-school experience and familiarity with secondary-school performance indicators are valued but not required
• Strong financial acumen and the ability to understand and govern enrollment economics, net tuition revenue, pricing, funded and unfunded financial aid, budgeting, endowment, and long-term institutional sustainability and growth
• Demonstrated success in fundraising and in building consequential relationships that produce measurable institutional support
• A record of identifying, recruiting, developing, and retaining exceptional leaders and creating an environment in which talented people can do their best work
• A clear understanding of and commitment to the formative value of FUMA’s structured military environment, including its role in developing discipline,responsibility, leadership, teamwork, confidence, and service; prior military service is welcomed but not required
• A demonstrated commitment to forming young men of character, self-command, resilience, and responsibility, particularly in the current cultural environment and with an awareness of and/or appreciation for youth mental health
• Exceptional communication, public-engagement, and relationship-building skills
Position Details:
This is a full-time, 12-month position. Compensation is commensurate with experience. The President will maintain an active external schedule, including substantial local and regional engagement and regular travel in support of enrollment, advancement, alumni relations, and institutional partnerships. The President reports directly to and partners with the Board of Trustees. The start date is flexible but will be no later than June 30, 2027; depending on start date, advance participation in transition communications and selected institutional engagement may be necessary for a successful transition.
