Commandant of Cadets
The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) invites applications for the position of Commandant of Cadets. Founded in 1839, VMI is a four year, undergraduate, state supported military college with approximately 1,700 cadets. The Institute offers degrees in engineering, natural sciences, life sciences, information and social sciences, arts and humanities, and all cadets are required to take one of three Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs throughout all four years of their cadetship. Cadets are held to high physical, mental, and moral standards, with approximately 50% of them commissioning into military service upon graduation.
The Commandant is responsible for the supervision, training and discipline of the Corps of Cadets. This position reports directly to the Superintendent (President). The Commandant manages a staff of approximately 30 professional and administrative personnel. Candidates must be highly adaptive to changing situations and priorities; able to work under intense pressure and timelines; capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously; and above all, be an extraordinary leader and communicator. A military service background that includes O-6 grade command experience is desirable. Combat experience is desirable. The understanding of military protocols, drill and ceremony, military customs and courtesies, and military organization is critical.
Preferred educational requirements include a Master’s degree or equivalent, advanced military schooling (preferably a Senior Service College graduate), and a background that demonstrates a commitment to the educational values of a demanding curriculum encompassing academic rigor, physical fitness and a strong military regimen. Management experience in an institution of higher education or other structured residential educational environment is desired. Compensation is competitive and VMI provides housing in historic quarters on the grounds of the Institute.
